Michael Starobin stands among Broadway’s most celebrated orchestrators, a sonic architect whose scores have redefined the sound of modern musical theatre. From the intricate counterpoint of Sunday in the Park with George to the raw urgency of Next to Normal, he has twice claimed the Tony for Best Orchestrations—first for the 2004 revival of Assassins and again five years later for Next to Normal.
His reach extends well beyond the footlights. At Disney, Starobin conducted and orchestrated The Hunchback of Notre Dame, then lent his lush, kinetic touch to the songs of Tangled. Film audiences have also heard his hand in the Oscar-winning Chicago, Rob Marshall’s Nine, the 2017 Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins Returns, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s tick, tick… BOOM!, and the upcoming Kiss of the Spider Woman.
